To be a centre of excellence in imparting technical knowledge in Electrical and Electronics field with professional ethics and human values.

DEPARTMENT MISSION

  • To provide an excellent and comprehensive undergraduate education in the field of electrical and electronics engineering to meet the Industrial and Societal demands.
  • To improve the knowledge, attitude, practical capabilities of the students.
  • To build team ethics, leadership qualities and to cater to the overall development of the students in professional and research oriented fields.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering was established in the year 2004. The department has a well motivated and dedicated qualified faculty. The department has a very active ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS ASSOCIATION which provides a platform to students to showcase their ability in the curricular and extra-curricular activities. The department has IEEE, SESI and ISTE professional bodies which arrange technical talks, workshops, conferences and project exhibitions. Industry-Institute Partnership Cell arranges the internship facilities to the students and also conducts the industrial tours to bridge the gap between industry and institute.

We encourage the students to carryout mini projects and present papers at various conferences through our R&D Innovation cell. This cell also helps the faculty to carry out research activities. We have a very efficient Teacher Guardian cell to provide emotional and technical support to the students. The Internal training and Placement cell in the department acts in tandem to increase the employability of the students.

The department has well equipped Power Electronics, Control systems, Microcontrollers, Circuit Simulation & Measurements, D.C. Machine & Synchronous Machines, Transformers & Induction Machines, Relay & H.V. and Power System Simulation Laboratories, spacious and well ventilated class rooms with state of the art and computing facilities. Apart from the central library in the college, the department has its own library with standard books for the reference of students and staff.

On behalf of our Students, Faculty, Principal and Management, it is my privilege to welcome you all for the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Canara Engineering College. The department was established in the academic year 2004-05 with an intake of 60. Our department offer B. E. programme in Electrical and Electronics Engineeringand it is approved by AICTE, affiliated to VTU, Belgaum.We have 10 faculty membersin which 3 are pursuing their Ph.D. and rest are all completed their Postgraduates.The Department has 12 well equipped laboratories as per the prescribed syllabus of University, also includes library which provides all kinds of text books/reference books which benefits students and faculty.The department is committed towards the academic and individual development of the students in enabling them to learn the current trends of Electrical & Electronics Engineering.

Our academic programme aims to prepare the students for new challenges in the area of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. We are committed to give our students an environment where they would be able to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they advance through the program. In addition to class room teaching, the students are guided and motivated to practically implement the principles learnt in classroom through experimentation in the laboratories which help them gain confidence and become skilled engineering professionals.

PROGRAMME EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

  1. To produce competent graduates with adequate knowledge in the field of Electrical and Electronics Engineering so that they can serve government agencies and private industries and also be entrepreneurs.
  2. To elevate the knowledge of our graduates to take up post- graduate studies in the fields of Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science and Management studies.
  3. To inculcate in our graduates an inclination for lifelong learning contributing to personal growth and societal improvement.

FACILITIES

Laboratories

All the laboratories in the department are well equipped with the updated software and technologies so as to provide required infrastructures to carry in-house projects for final year students. Labs are well illuminated and ventilated.

Analog Electronics Lab

  • This lab is utilized by the 2nd year E & E students to conduct experiments related to analog electronics circuits such as design and testing of clipper and clamper circuits, amplifiers, rectifiers etc.
  • Equipments used:

Logic Design Lab

  • This lab is utilized by the 2nd year E & E students to conduct experiments related to digital electronics circuits such as realization of adders, MUX/DEMUX, code convertors, decoders, different counters etc.
  • Equipments used:
    • Digital trainer Kits
    • different digital ICs
    • resistors

Power Electronics Lab

  • This lab is utilized by the 2nd year E & E students to conduct experiments related to Power electronics circuits such as static characteristics of SCR, IGBTs, MOSFET, designing of AC voltage controller, convertors etc.

Microcontroller Lab

  • This lab is utilized by the 2nd year E & E students to conduct experiments related to micro controller 8051 and MSP430 such as programming in 8051 and MSP430 using relevant software and assembler kits.

    • 8051 micro controller Kit
    • keyboard
    • Computers
    • UPS
    • interfacing devices

Circuit Simulation and Measurements Lab

  • This lab is utilized by the 3rd year students to conduct experiments related Electrical circuits to measure electrical parameter such as Power, Energy etc.
  • Equipments used:
    • Kelvin’s double bridge
    • D’schoty bridge
    • energy meter voltmeter
    • wattmeter
    • ammeter, CRO etc

Transformer and Induction Machines Lab

  • This lab is utilized by the 3rd year students to conduct experiments related to Transformers such as Sumpner’s test, parallel operation OC and SC test etc. and related to Induction Machines

    • Wattmeters, ammeters

Control Systems Lab

  • This lab is utilized by the 3rd year students to conduct experiments related Control systems such as simulation using Matlab, PID controller, AC and DC servomotors, Lag-Lead Compensation networks etc.
  • Equipments used:
    • PC
    • Different modules related to control systems
    • ammeter, voltmeter, etc

DC and Synchronous machines Lab

  • This lab is utilized by the 3rd year students to conduct experiments related to DC and Synchronous machines such as OC & SC test, Efficiency and regulation calculation using various tests
  • Equipments used:
    • DC and synchronous machines,
    • Wattmeters, ammeters,
    • Voltmeters etc.

CAED Lab

  • This lab is utilized by the 3rd year students to Draw DC and AC machine parts, winding diagram, single line diagram using Auto Cad software. Individually students will draw the diagrams
  • Equipment’s used:
    • PCs and AutoCad software

Power System Simulation Lab

  • This lab is utilized by the Final year E & E students to execute programs related to Power System by using either Matlab or Mipower packages. Programs such as Y-bus formation by different methods, Analysis of ABCD constants, Load flow analysis etc. are executed individually
  • Equipment’s used:
    • Personal Computer,
    • Software package Matlab & Mipower.

Relay and high Voltage Lab

  • This lab is utilized by theFinal year students to conduct experiments related to relay and HV engineering such as characteristics of different type of relays-under voltage, over voltage, protection relay etc. Each experiment is conducted in a group of 4 members
  • Equipment’s used:
    • Different testing kits.


Other Major Facilities

  • Conducive environment to conduct extracurricular and co curricular activities in the department
  • Professional bodies such as IEEE, SESI, EEEA etc. functions actively to help overall development of students.
  • Program such as soft skill training, internal training, GATE training are organized regularly for the students to meet the industrial requirements.
  • Department has Industry Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC), which organizes technical training programs for advanced learning
  • Department also encourages the staff members to enhance their knowledge by deputing them to various workshops and conferences, organizing faculty development programs..

ACADEMIC DETAILS

Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka. This programme covers a wide range of general engineering principles and concepts. We encourage the students to think in innovative ways, challenge existing practice and equip with the skills and confidence to make changes to industry. The faculty members have a strong sense of responsibility to provide the finest possible education for the students.

Professional Society conducted mini project exhibition to 4th and 6th sem students. Department Placement Coordinator and Department Alumni Association conducted a Two Day Workshop -"AKHILAGURU", by Alumni for students of 4th and 6th semester. Mr.Sayed Riza , 2017 pass out, explained about Transaction Risk Management in Amazon. He also briefed about the study to be done about any company before the placement drive. He emphasized on the necessity of having a perfect grip on Microsoft Excel. Ms.Jemisha M D'Souza, 2016 pass out, briefed about the chip layout process in Karmic. She focused on the importance of core subjects required to enter any semiconductor industry. She also shared a lot of technical materials. Mr. Vivek Shennoy, 2017 pass out, working as Software Engineer in PRDC, explained about RLC Transients, which is very much essential for power system analysis. He also conducted a MCQ test as an assessment and awarded prize to the winners. Later he conducted a session on Resume building and also reviewed few resume prepared by students and gave them useful tips. Mr. Vishal Prabhu, 2017 pass out handled a session on Switchgear and Panels. He also explained about various projects completed by Karaavali Switchgears. The Alumni interactions are one of the most important activities to happen in the department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering. This is the way in which we get to interact with our Alumni to share their experiences in college and after college. A technical talk on "substation planning and Maintenance" has been organized by Solar Energy society of India student chapter of Canara Engineering college in association with Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering on 28/10/2017 at 10.00AM in College seminar Hall. Mr. K Paramesha, Deputy Director,Karnataka Electricity Regulating Commission (KERC) Bengaluru was resource person. He explained about different types of substations used in Generation, Transmission and Distribution of Power. He explained the land requirement, cost and other necessary conditions to be satisfied to erect a new substation. In his lecture, he explained the importance of maintenance of substation. About 107 Students of third, fifth and seventh semester Eletrical and Electronics Engineering including 10 faculty members were benefited from talk. On occasion of Akshaya Urja Divas, Solar Energy society of India(SESI) CEC Chapter in association with Dept association of EEE has organised a one day Industrial visit to 4MW solar power plant in NMPT Mangalore. Mr. Aleshappa Superintendent Engineer Electrical NMPT has given the explanation about working of plant, as Many 16608 solar panels f 256W has been erected on the ground. power generated is synchronised with grid of MESCOM at 33KV voltage level.

Mr. Santhosh J, Additional director of Central Power Research Institute(CPRI) Bhopal Division was the resource person. In his talk, he explained about different voltage levels, different circuit breakers used in switchgear division of power system.He also explain and showed different testing methods of circuit breakers and high voltage equipment used in CPRI Bangalore and BHOPAL division with help of video and power point presentation.

2008-2009 passed out student Mr.Deviprasad addressed our 8th, 6th and 4th Sem., students on 28-04-2017. He shared his experience and work environment in Gulf. The talk on Topic “Solar Photovoltaic System” inspired the students about the importance of electric power generation through renewable energy. He also mentioned about the better life in core companies compared with IT job. The detailed single line diagrams of various grid connected solar photovoltaic systems were highlighted in the presentation. The course was for duration of 8 weeks (Jan-March 2017) and was funded by Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India.

Two Mr. Divyesh Divakar was the judge for National level technical paper contest held at Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil, on 17th February 2016.


Mr. Vinod kumar B judged paper presentation in YEN SPLASH XVI at Yenepoya Institute of Technology on 17th March 2016. He was also a judge for academic project competition of final year students at KVG College of Engineering. The competition was held on 21st May 2016.


Prof. Raghuveera H, Sr. Lecturer, Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department, Canara Engineering College was a resource person in “Entrepreneurship Awareness Programme” on 3rd November 2015 held at M V Shetty Institute of technology, Moodabidre. He delivered a talk on ‘Entrepreneur, Entrepreneurship and Enterprise’.

Deekshith Kumar M, Karthik Marathe, Vidyadhar Mallya M, Vikhyath won Best Paper Award at International conference on Recent trends in Technology held on 18th May 2018 at SDMIT, Ujire for paper titled ‘Detection of fault location in transmission lines’.


Akshay Krishnadas Bhat, Kini siddhesh Praveen, Manasa N P, Manu balnad won Best Presentation Award at International conference on Recent trends in Technology held on 18th May 2018 at SDMIT, Ujire for paper titled ‘Smart workstation integrated with Arduino and raspberry pi based embedded system’.


Vasuki G Shanbhag and Kaushik Prabhu presented their work ‘Design and performance analysis of parabolic type solar thermoelectric generator’ at National level paper presentation competition held at KVGCE, Sullia on 12th April 2018 and won first prize.


Gautham Shetty and Bharath R J won second prize by presenting ‘Automatic drip irrigation system’ in National level paper presentation competition on 23rd April 2018 held at Anjuman Institute of Technology, Bhatkal.


Chaitra and Dhanya Anchan won third prize at Anjuman Institute of Technology, for presenting a paper titled ‘LED Lamp Driver for Universal Input Using CUK Converter’ on 23rd April 2018.


Mr. Alistair J Larsrado of 3rd year won first prize in national level Inquisition competition held at SJEC, Vamanjoor on 22nd February 2017.


Ms. Anjali shetty B, Mr. Floyd James Sequira and Ms. Akshatha A Mallya presented a paper "Design of 4 bit 4 pulse finite state machine serial adder" in 3rd IEEE International conference on "Advances in Electrical, Electronics, Information, Communication and Bio-Informatics (AEEICB-2107) held at Prathush Engineering College , Chennai on 27th and 28th Feb 2017.


Mr. Floyd James Sequeria and Ms. Sri Gowri Hebbar secured first place in National level technical paper presentation for presenting the paper titled ‘Maneuverable and Customised chair for differently able’ held at KVG College of Engineering, Sullia on 28th April 2017.


Mamatha Y J and Puneeth B won first prize in National level paper presentation at AIT Chikkamangaluru by presenting the paper titled “Hybrid Power generation for domestic applications”.


Mr.Pawan Shetty, Mr. Pawan S and Mr. Anuj of 4th semester were runners up in treasure hunt event in Varnothsava 2017 – A Intercollege techno cultural fest held at Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management, Bantakal, Udupi.



Two teams of our college bagged 2nd and 3rd place in National Robotics Championship (Zonal) held at KPT on 26th and 27th August 2015. These two teams represented our college in National level championship held at IIT, Madras.
1. II Place won by Akshatha Mallya, Anjali Shetty, Floyd Sequira (3rd year E&EE), Prajwal K, Karunakar Pai (4th year E&C)
2. III place won by Srigowri, Nikhila D (3rd year E&EE), Rakesh Kamath (4th year E&EE), Vignesh Kamath, Rohan Shenoy (3rd year E&C)


Floyd James Sequeira, IV semester was nominated as Student representative in IEEE Ex- Com committee for the year 2015-16.


Floyd James Sequeira, IV semester participated in India’s Biggest Robotics Championship at IIT Mumbai on 4th and 5th April 2015.


The final year project titled ‘Remote controlled tree climbing machine’ by Chandrakanth Shenoy, Arpith Kumar, Loyal Rayan and Manoj Kumar guided by Prof. H Raghuveera was adjudged as one of the outstanding projects of the year and was selected for the ‘Project of the Year’ award, under Student Project Programme (SPP) of Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology during the seminar and exhibition held at sahyadri college of Engineering and Management, Mangalore on 20th and 21st August 2015.
