ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The role of IT has evolved from supporting business to transforming them. In order to sustain in this transformation, one has to identify the market needs, introduce excellent academic processes and bench mark the outcomes as per the defined standard.

The Information Science and Engineering Department focuses on all-round development encourages a vibrant interest in academic as well as in extra curricular activities. The Department has fully equipped laboratories and well qualified and experienced staff. The Department regularly arranges seminars, workshops from Industry Experts for students as well as staff and also organizes industry visits for students. The Department offers add-on courses to cope up with the latest trends in technology. The track record of result is excellent.
Department organizes motivational talk, placement guidance, workshop & carrier guidance through prominent alumni. The faculty frequently attend the staff development program (FDP/Seminar) in Offline /Online mode to update themselves in a technological change. Departments encourage the students to participates in the extra-curricular activities under student association CiPix. Students also participates in various social outreach programs (SOP) to enhance their leadership skills, teamwork communication and awareness on a protection of environment and social responsibilities.

ACADEMIC DETAILS

Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Information science & Engineering (IS&E) programme is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Karnataka. The department aims at cultivating thirst for knowledge, vigor and the vision to look beyond the evident in students. The students are well versed with the exhaustive and thoroughly chosen curriculum, guided as they are by an experienced faculty. Hands on training sessions in various fields of application of IT have imparted to the students considerable acumen in the vast sector. The students perform project work as part of their curriculum to enhance their specification skills, leading to multifaceted development of their engineering concepts.

Engineering graduates in Information Science and Engineeringwill be able to:

  1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
  3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.
  4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
  5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
  7. Environment and Sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.

In order to impart the skill enhancement training to the Lab instructor of the department, and according with the new scheme of the VTU(2021), Department of ISE has conducted five days Staff development program which started on 19th of September 2022. Professor Deepak from CSE conducted a session on Data Structure Lab on 19th and 20th of Sep 2022. Professor Ajay Shet from CSE has conducted Session on JAVA lab on 21st of Sep 2022. Professor Vasanth Nayak, Professor Ajith , Professor Vinay have conducted session on Analog and Digital Electronics Lab on 22 and 23rd Sep 2022 respectively.Based on the feed back from the Participants, the SDP program for 5 days was found to be effective in order to improve the knowledge in the above mentioned subject.

The webinar session on "Research Article: Write Ups, Best Practices, and Essential Tools" was organized by the Department of Information Science and Engineering. The resource person covered basic ideas about how to write research articles, what are the best practices to prepare quality papers, usage of Scopus citations for the published papers, how to identify the best journals for submission, and how to avoid rejections. The overall session was very informative and a total of 21 faculty from different branches participated in this webinar and benefited.

Carrier guidance for placement preparation (25-06-2022)

Report on Talk: Diana Minine Gudinho passed out in the year of 2020 from ISE department with job offer of Infosys and TCS, now currently working as system engineer in a TCS Ninja Bangalore. She addressed the 3rd year students of ISE in the FS-LAB with Online Mode. Alumni coordinator has welcomed her & student participant for this event. She initially started with her life journey in the college, she was like normal students in the learning subjects as on spending the semester she was serious about the academic percentage and placement preparation. Mainly concentrated in the part of aptitude that results she got placed two iconic company. She mentioned some subjects are key role in the technical interview for getting placed. She shared her company working environment. Resume review & Mock Interview topic were discussed for each participant in the event. Good interaction was in the event, many suggestions given by speaker regarding verbal and non-communication skill, writing skill, technical skill and what to add on to resume and what not to add on to resume etc., and also how to improve their performance in the upcoming placement interviews.

What’s Cooking Competition was organized for students on 28/05/2022. The event gave a platform to the students to demonstrate their cooking knowledge and skills related to: developing and following a recipe, preparation of a dish, and displaying the dish before a judging panel where it will be evaluated on flavour, taste. One hour was given for preparation and 15 minutes for presentation. Judging panel comprised of Mr Prashanth Kamath and Mrs Vidhyalaxmi.

A technical talk on " GITHUB" has been organized by the Information Science and Engineering department, on 4th December, 2021 for the students of 5th and 3rd semester ISE. Ms. Kshama Pai, Associate Software Engineer,Accenture, delivered the talk. A total of 39 students of 2nd year ISE & 9 students of 3rd Year ISE have attended the talk. The speaker covered the following topics: why use github, what is github, how to get started with github, how to build a repository, how to create a branch, how to commit, how to open and merge full requests, and a github case study. Implementation : A technical talk on " Deep Learning and its applications in real time, a quick insight" has been organised by the Information Science and Engineering department, on 21st November, 2021 for the students of 5th and 7th semester ISE. BRANCH ENTRY (31-10-2021)

Branch Entry for 2019 and 2020 batch students: We have organised branch entry for 2nd year and 3rd year students under the departmental association - CIPIX. The program began at 11.30 AM with a formal function. Dr. Jagadeesh N, Associate Professor and Head, Department of ISE, and Dr. Krishna Prabhu, Professor and Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering were the chief guests of the formal function. Dr. Jagadeesh N had addressed the students regarding ISE branch and facilities in the department level. Dr. Krishna Prabhu had addressed the students regarding the importance of Importance of Programming in mechanical fields such as robotics. CIPIX president and the final year students gave a warm welcome for the 2nd year and 3rd year students. CIPIX team conducted various cultural events and games for the juniors. All the students were participated. The program came to end at 1.30 PM.

The information and communications technologies have the potential to provide new solutions to development challenges, particularly in the context of globalization, and can foster economic growth, competitiveness, access to information and knowledge, poverty eradication, and social inclusion that will help to expedite the integration of all countries, especially developing countries, in particular the least developed countries, into the global economy. World development information day was celebrated by organizing an event of poster design competition by the department association – CIPIX on 23rd October 2021 for the 3rd semester students. 11 students participated in the event.

Ayudha Pooja was organized in the department on 13/10/2021 in FS Laboratory at 10:00am by cultural committee and department association CIPIX. The entire lab was decorated by students with flowers and Rangoli. All the students and faculty are participated and took blessings from Lord Sharada. Departmental Association Activity "Stress Interview (29-08-2019)

Stress Interview is a technique that deliberately places the job candidate in a stressful situation to observe how the candidate reacts during the job interview. It was held at Canara Engineering College on 29th August 2019 for the departmental association activity under CIPIX in Placement Interview Room. The resource person from Infosys who was also an alumni of CEC was called to judge the event. Around 13 students from different branches participated in the event out of which 8 were from IS, 3 from CS, 1each from EC and ME. Participants got advice about how to give an inter-view and the criteria to be followed by the judge. Winners were given prizes and participation certificate.

Social Outreach Programme-Teaching self help for disabilities (29-08-2019)

This activity was performed at Roshni special school,Sirsi. Students were guided by the mentor to assess and implement their problems,weakness. Students were also guided the proper channel of implementing the solution.These mentally challenged people used to coordinate well with the teacher but not with others.They used to find difficult in performing their day-to-day routines. Finally towards the end of the day , the students came up with the solution by teaching self help and enhancing the communication between them.

DrawZoid, pencil sketching competition, in which the partici-pants should draw on the given topics using only pencils. It was held at Canara Engineering College on 28th August 2019 in Auditorium under departmental association committe CIPIX. 10 topics were given to participants of which they had to choose one topic and draw on the chosen topic. Around 27 students from different branches participated in the event out of which 10 were from IS, 9 from CS, 4 from EC and 3 from EEE and 1 from ME. Winners were given prizes and participa-tion certificate

Department Association and Women's Welfare Committee organized Mehandi competition for all branches of girls. Mehandi is a form of body art, in which decorative de-signs are created on a person's body, using a paste, created from the powdered dry leaves of the henna plant. It was held at Canara Engineering Col-lege on 28th August 2019 in Auditorium under departmental association committe CIPIX. Around 31 teams from different branches participated in the event out of which 15were from IS, 13 from CS, 3 from EEE. Winners were given prizes and participation certificate

The one-day Workshop on “Cloud Computing” was organized by the Department of Information Science & Engineering under Industry Institute Partnership Cell (IIPC) on 17th August 2019. The entire workshop was coordinated by IIPC Coordinator ,Prof. Pragathi Hegde and Staff Coordinator, Prof. Geethalaxmi. The inaugural function was held at EC Seminar Hall at 9.30am. The Resource Person Mr. Prateek V Shetti was cordially invited by Dr Sumathi Pawar, HOD of Information Science & engineering. Mr. Prateek Shetti explained about private cloud, virtualization and open stack. Mr Prateek V Shetti showed some demos projects related to cloud for the students. He also emphasized the importance of cloud data centres in the future years. The speaker had also given some important suggestions regarding placements for final year students. There was total participation of 53 students in this workshop.

Program begins at 2:30 pm with a prayer, HOD Dr. Sumathi Powar was welcomed and addressed the function. HOD appreciated to many students about their achievement in various curricular, co-curricular & extra-curricular activities and distributed the certificates. Prof., Nayak Nayak delivered key guidance for outgoing students. Prof. Geethalaxmi Madam given a motivation talk to outgoing students. Three final year students shared their departmental experiences to the juniors. Code Quest (01-03-2019)

The Code Quest Event is a technical event organized by aakriti19 for CS/IS students. Total of 77 students participated in this event. The event was conducted in group of 2 members. The venue was DBMS LAB (CSE Dept.). The event began at 9:30 am and has 3 rounds. The first round was of 15 minutes and students need to find the bug in the program. The 2nd round was to find the solution for the problem and pass all test cases within 30 minutes. There were total of 5 teams qualified for the 3rd round. The last round was to solve the quest in 45 minutes. The event got ended at 11:am. 2 teams won the Code quest event. The entire event was successfully coordinated by Prof. Pragathi Hegde(Faculty Coordinator) and Bimba Pawar, Prathiksha Shanbhag(Student coordinators.

Gaming Workshop (26-02-2019)

The One day Gaming workshop by 99Games Pvt. Ltd, Udupi was conducted in association with IIPC and Placement Department at CEC on 26/2/2019. The morning session was held in seminar hall and the resource persons from the company introduced the basic concepts of programming essential in the IT industry and for the game development. The afternoon session was a hands on session at the cyber center and students were able to develop basic game application. Students were able to gain lot of knowledge regarding game development. Prof. Prashanth Kumar, Prof. Pragathi Hegde and Prof Namratha Padiyar successfully coordinated the event. Actively participated students were given attractive prizes. There was total participation of 50 students (40 from CSE and 10 from ISE) in the workshop who had an eligibility criteria of 7.5 CGPA above.

IS&E Department organized Cantech-18 Paper presentation competition for 2,4 and 6 semester students. Separate presentation platforms are created for 2, 4 and 6 semester students. One prize is allotted for best presentation for 2nd and 4th semester. Two best presentation prizes are given for 6th semester students. The Presentation is held in 1st year, 2nd year and 4th year classrooms. Total of 17 teams from 6th semester, 12 teams from 4th semester and 10 teams from 2nd semester participated in the event. 6 students from 2,4 and 6 semester students worked as student coordinators. 6 faculty members served as event judges. Ltd., Kochi, Kerala was incorporated as a private limited company in 1998 with an objective of offering advanced technological solutions in the fields of Information Technology (IT) and Information Technology Enabled services (ITES). 50 students of 4th semester visited Spectrum Softtech Pvt. Ltd, Kochi, Kerala, along with 2 faculty members (Prof. Vasanth Nayak and Prof. Anal B). The visit was in the morning session (9:30AM to 11:00 AM). Ms. Manoj Padmanabhan gave a brief introduction about Dotnet application and next generation windows services. The .NET was developed by Microsoft. TRAINING & PLACEMENT: The IT Champs provides the internship for a period of 3 months where the students will be trained for SAP and the certificate will be provided after the completion of the Internship. In the morning session, he shared his experiences of being a successful Entrepreneur and various ways in which a person can become an Entrepreneur and many more things about project management and ended up the morning session at 12.30pm.
