ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Mechanical Engineering branch at Canara Engineering College was started in the year 2004 with an intake of 60. Mechanical Engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines.

The curriculum prepares a student for a wide variety of technical and professional areas having their roots in Mechanical Engineering - areas as diverse as Aeronautics, Aerospace, Power generation, Energy conversion and conservation, Transportation, Manufacturing, Product Design, Robotics and controls and others.

FROM THE DESK OF DEPARTMENT HEAD

Mechanical Engineering Department is one of the most active and most happening Departments in CEC. It is one of the very few departments around Mangalore that has the Industrial CNC Machining centres. A team of 02 Professors, and 15 Assistant Professors are working with passion and dedication to ensure career oriented Total Quality Education. To meet such a feat the Department has introduced additional labs on Advanced Material testing, CNC operation, Dissection lab, Bio diesel Processing lab, Computer Aided Modelling Lab (On AutoCAD, SolidWorks and Creo Software) with an objective to provide the practical exposure to students. The Department organizes many Workshops, Webinars and Faculty Development Programmes in variety of domains for the benefit of Students and Faculty. The Department has MoU with MNCs who visit the department to impart career-oriented training. We are totally focussed on Outcome based education (OBE) via Industrial Internships and Product development centres. Exclusive work is being carried out on Electric vehicles in association of Electrical Department. A research work with a DST funding of 30 Lakhs is under progress in the field of Plastic recycling. These are new fields where the Department is working to make students Industry ready

PROGRAM EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Graduates of Mechanical Engineering program will:

  1. Be capable of applying relevant skills of basic sciences, engineering design and modeling, manufacturing, management etc. learnt in the programme for their professional career.
  2. Strengthen themselves, using the infrastructure at their disposal, to get placed in the areas of their interest, enter into higher education and take up research assignments so as to meet the challenges of engineering world.

Engineering graduates will be able to:

  1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences.

The department of Mechanical Engineering started in the year 2004 with a sole aim to impart quality education to students in the field of Mechanical Engineering. In this lab students study about various tools, fitting work, sheet metal work and welding.

Computer Aided Engineering Drawing Lab

    This lab with high end computers and drafting package is devoted for training first year students in computer aided drafting.






Computer Aided Machine Drawing Lab

    In this lab students study about 2-D and 3-D Drawings of fasteners like bolt and nut, couplings, Keys and joints, rivets, thread forms and 3-D assembly drawings of different Machine Elements.

    In this lab students study about various machining operations using Lathe, drilling, milling, shaping, grinding machines.

    This lab deals with the study of various performance characteristics of Internal Combustion Engines like 2 stroke, 4 stroke petrol, diesel engines, analysis and other tests related to energy conversion engineering.

    This lab deals with the study of various performance characteristics of Heat and Mass Transfer equipments like Air Conditioner, Refrigeration, Heat flow analysis etc.

Design Lab

    This lab deals with the study of various design aspects like Vibration, Balancing, Whirling of Shaft, Bearings, Gyroscopic Systems, Physical Stress Analysis Methods etc.

Computer Aided Modeling and Analysis Lab

    In this lab students are taught how to do Finite Element Analysis for any structural members which are exposed to different types of load like, Axial, Transverse & inclined Load, Temperature in the material, Stress analysis and Vibration analysis.

    35 Computers with Ansys V12 software installed.


Computer Integrated Manufacturing Lab:

    In this lab students learn about how to write CNC part programming of turning, drilling and milling operations and to do Simulation. Using CAM software to create model and do sequence of machining operation and generate CNC part program.

  • G35 Computers with EdgeCAM and CADEM softwares installed.

Dissection lab

    The Department has also initiated Dissection lab of which the main objectives are:

    • Implement ‘Technical Training Programme’, a proprietary teaching and education programme in Engineering and Technology
    • Provide training and education to students and faculty members of Institutes and Engineering Colleges.
    • Hands-on practical sessions on the most scientific way of repair, maintenance and servicing of vehicles
    • Create research facilities
    • Organise Student training program (STP),workshops and seminars.

CNC Hands-on Lab

In this lab in addition to regular curriculum the students will learn to write program and execute the same on machines for several turning operations like plain, step, groove, contour turning, external thread cutting and drilling in CNC Turning Center. Similarly face milling, slot milling, end milling, pocket milling and contour milling operations inCNC Vertical Machining Center.

  • CNC Vertical Machining Center – VM 300 (TAL Manufacturing Solution Ltd.)

Advanced Materials Lab

Material Science is one of the prime importance field in mechanical engineering. Microstructure and hardness are important properties which govern the behaviour of materials. The current laboratory syllabus is designed to improve the technical skill of students in material microstructure and micro-Vicker's hardness study.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers 4 years B.E course.

This programme offers the students with the theory and practical courses in the areas of Engineering Design, Thermodynamics, Material Science, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Management and others. The Department offers the students with many elective subjects. The Department is backed by a number of state of the art Laboratories such as Computer Aided Engineering Drawing Lab, Computer Aided Machine Drawing Lab, Computer Aided Modeling & Analysis Lab and Computer Integrated Manufacturing Lab, well established basic laboratories such as Basic Workshop Practice, Design Lab, Material Testing Lab, Foundry & Forging Lab, Machine Shop, Mechanical Measurements & Metrology Lab, Heat Transfer Lab, Energy Conversion Lab with full fledged facilities.

The Department is committed to impart quality education to students and encourages the students to undergo Internships and offers Industrial Visits to make the students industry ready. In order to meet these requirements and orient the students, the department has initiated additional labs like Dissection Lab, CNC lab and Advanced Materials lab.Bio diesel Processing lab, Computer Aided Modelling Lab (On AutoCAD, SolidWorks and Creo Software), PLC and Automation Lab are offered to students. Further the Department also organises In-House Symposium to boost the confidence and communication skills in students. For the benefit of Students and Faculty, the Department organises many Workshops, Webinars in association with reputed Industries like Machenn Innovations etc. The industrial visits are organised from I year to promote interaction with industries. The Department has initiated 'Innovate', the National conference for the benefit of students. The students are provided with training for better placement opportunities in core mechanical industries.

Description of the project: This project aims to develop process and optimization for recycling of plastic waste and coated paper waste for producing filament stocks for 3D printing, and granules for plastic industries as a replacement for the virgin plastic granules. The successful execution aids in replacing virgin plastics with recycled plastics in the plastic industries. .

Lot of Cultural events were organized which showcased the rich cultural heritage of the region. The procession of Goddess Sri Durgaparameshwari started at 11.00.A.M from the college Main entrance accompanied with Chende, Nashik Band, Pili Gobbu, Mahishamardhini Dance. The Pooja started at 1.00.P.M and prasada was distributed to all the members present.

Farewell to the final students was organized by pre final year students. Students of pre final year performed cultural activities and hosted gaming events. Mementos were distributed to the senior students. HOD Dr.Venkatesh shared some of the memories with the students and cheered the gathering. Final year students were given an opportunity to share their experiences during the four years of their engineering life. Inauguration of Maker space for Innovation and Research in Plastic Recycling Technology (26-05-2022)

The project titled "Development of filaments for 3D printing and other applications, from recycled PET bottles and other plastic waste" is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, New Delhi. Ref: DST/TDT/WMT/Plastic Waste/2021/06 (G). Total fund allotted by DST is Rs.30,41,764 with a capital component of Rs. 11,00,000/- and General component of Rs. 19,41,764/- for a period of Three years. Dr. B. ATAL FDP on Advancements and Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Additive Manufacturing (08-02-2021)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organised an ATAL Academy sponsored One Week Online Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on "Advancements and Entrepreneurial Opportunities in Additive Manufacturing". The FDP lectures were delivered by faculty members and industry experts from reputed academic institutions/organisations and industries. The FDP focused on Metal Additive manufacturing, Bio printing, 3D Printing techniques and its benefits. The program also included elaborated in depth lectures with high level of experience from industry with practice and demo sessions using latest simulation software. About 100 Participants from various institution participated in this programme, certificates were also issued for them. The FDP provided an opportunity for participants to know about the strategy for developing as an entrepreneurial in 3D printing field.

An interaction of two companies that our students had started is organised on 2nd November 2020 in Mangalore. Objective being to build a nexus between two and grow by mutual cooperation. Company 1. Stella Designs. By Sumanth Shenoy (E&C) and Suhas Kamath (Mech.). They are into 3D printing, component manufacturing.Recently they also had a website launch Company 2. Meta Studios by Vignesh Kamath (Mech), Jeevan Kamath (Mech, 7th SEM). They are into Digital marketing, E-commerce, Social media ads etc. They are looking for someone who helps in Java script coding at back end. one of our student Raghavendra (7th SEM), who joined their company on 2nd November 2020 . He will look after modelling and other allied facilitates available in Mechanical softwares, for both the companies and may start his own company later.

Employability Skills Training on Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) (13-02-2020)

The objective of the Training was to reduce the gap between industry and academia; hence the training was concentrated more with hands on training. A part drawing was given to the students and they were asked to produce the part by their own by adapting the technique or process that is followed in a production industry. This helped the students to get real time work experience and knowledge in producing a part. Understanding a drawing, planning the sequence of machining operation and the inspection of part before and after the production process was taught. At the end of training students machining their own models using CNC machines and check for the quality.

A six days hands on training was conducted for the 2nd semester students. 29 students actively participated in the training. An introduction to Autodesk AutoCAD was given, following which the basic tools used in AutoCAD were discussed. Machine components, company brand logos and some other drawings were provided to the students as exercise problems to understand the basic usage of AutoCAD tools. All Students keenly participated in the training. On the last day of the training, 3D drafting was dealt with where students were given problems on Isometric projections. This workshop mainly concentrated on imparting knowledge and first hand experience with working with 3D Printers. 3D Printing technology is considered as the next emerging field and it becomes necessary to explore the leaps and bounds of this technology. With this regard, Machenn innovations had provided this workshop so that students could work with 3D Printers and gain knowledge about this technology for which 2 printers were used. Students were given multiple projects and they had to come up with ideas and design the models to be printed on the printers which the students have successfully completed. One printer is also permanently installed in the department so that in the coming future, industry projects could be done by the students as a part of their internship. An MOU was signed between Machenn innovations and Canara Engineering College for further collaboration.

Orientation Day program for the freshers of 2019-20 of Mechanical Engineering was held on 8th August, 2019, at Canara Engineering College. Six days hands on workshop on workshop on autodesk autocad and solidworks for CAED and CAMD (04-01-2019)

The whole idea of the hands on workshop was to train the faculties on autocad and solidworks platform which could be employed in the regular curriculum to impart knowledge to the students and make them industry ready by bridging the gap between industry and academia. Mr. prathvi briefed about the importance and use of these software's in the industry and how they could be connected to the regular curriculum. The remaining 5 days were completely hands on for all the enrolled faculties right from the basics of CAED and CAMD and concluding with a test for 100 marks. All the basics related to curriculum and industry were dealt with during the hands on session.
